- Where: Glanton Municipal Complex, 123 LaGrange Street, Grantville
No agenda had been posted on the city’s meetings page as of Nov. 4. We’ll update this brief when it appears. The meeting falls on the third Monday, not the usual fourth-Monday slot, and the city’s calendar lists no Nov. 23 meeting.
The public hearing: an outdoor shooting range
According to the city’s notice, the hearing will “receive public comment regarding a recommendation of the Planning Commission” on a special use permit for an outdoor shooting range at 514 Bohannon Road. The applicant is J&J Trail & Target, LLC, doing business as Lock, Stock & Barrel Outdoors. The notice says the parcel is zoned General Commercial.
The Planning Commission voted unanimously on Oct. 20 to recommend denial, “based on citizen comments,” according to the commission’s minutes. Council makes the final decision.
What the minutes say:
- The site. The application covers 514 Bohannon Road, which the commission’s agenda describes as an existing developed site with a building and a shooting range, “currently not in use.” The commission’s agenda lists one 5.12-acre parcel zoned General Commercial. The minutes list three parcels totaling 13.12 acres, two of them zoned Rural Development. The city’s hearing notice mentions only the General Commercial parcel.
- The applicant’s case. Applicant Jeremy Phillips told the commission the outdoor range had been in continuous use since 1999 and was used by the Grantville Police Department in June 2026. He provided business license and state corporate registration records, and said he intended to improve the range to meet NRA requirements for 50-yard and 100-yard outdoor ranges.
- Public comment. Five people spoke, all opposed. They cited noise, safety for nearby homes, children and pets, stray bullets and ricochets, and property values. One speaker questioned whether the business license matched the state corporate registration.
A copy of the application and the Planning Commission’s recommendation is on file for public review in the City Clerk’s office, according to the notice.
