Grantville GA schools: Coweta pilots weapons detection and clear-bag rules at Nov. 6 football game

By The Grantville Ledger · Nov 5, 2026

Grantville children attend Coweta County School System schools — most of the city is zoned for Glanton or Moreland Elementary, then Smokey Road Middle and Newnan High. District officials are piloting stronger security at a large Friday night football game, and parents should know the rules may show up at other big extracurricular events later, including games that draw Newnan High families.

What’s new on Friday, Nov. 6

According to The Citizen and WSB-TV, Coweta will pilot:

The measures sit on top of ordinary event security and law enforcement already used at Coweta extracurricular events. District officials say they are not for regular school-day operations — only for large after-hours extracurricular gatherings that bring visitors onto school campuses.

Clear-bag rules for the pilot

From the district’s published bag requirements, as reported by The Citizen and WSB-TV:

AllowedLimit
Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bagsNo larger than 12″ × 6″ × 12″
Small clutch bags (with or without a strap)No larger than 4.5″ × 6.5″
One-gallon clear plastic bagsPermitted
Bookbags and backpacksProhibited

Noncompliant bags will not be allowed into the stadium; patrons will be asked to leave them in their vehicles. Exceptions for medically necessary items may be made after a security inspection.

Why the district is piloting this

Superintendent Evan Horton, quoted by The Citizen and WSB-TV, said the district has had two incidents in the past year and a half in which firearms were discovered during extracurricular athletic events on campus, with no larger incident in either case. He said the firearms were brought by visitors, not by students at the competing schools, and that the district has a responsibility to take prudent steps so events stay safe for guests, students and employees.

Safety Director Danielle Rosa, also quoted in those reports, asked spectators to arrive early, travel light and follow directions from school personnel and law enforcement, noting entry may take longer that evening. She said the gates are an added layer of protection alongside existing law-enforcement and emergency partners — not a replacement for those practices — and that the district may use the systems at other large extracurricular events that draw many non-school visitors, while refining the practices after the Nov. 6 pilot.

Coweta campuses and athletic facilities are designated drug-free and weapons-free. District reminders cite Georgia law, including O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127.1, on weapons in school safety zones; prohibited weapons remain barred at school athletic events except where the law expressly allows them.
