Griffin Street still closed to through traffic as utility work continues

By The Grantville Ledger · Nov 5, 2026 · Updated Nov 5, 2026

GRANTVILLE — Drivers cutting through downtown still need a detour: the city’s website continues to warn that Griffin Street is closed to through traffic for utility construction, and a second banner says AT&T work near Griffin and Church streets continues. Both notices remained on the city home page as of Thursday, Nov. 5.

The July 20 update said construction would begin Tuesday, July 21 — a day ahead of the earlier plan — with utility work starting July 22. The closed stretch is from the Summerhill subdivision to Smith Street. The city estimated about three months to finish. That window would have pointed toward late October; the fact that the banner is still live in early November means residents should treat the street as closed until the city takes the notice down or posts a reopen date.

A separate Utilities notice says AT&T is relocating facilities on Church Street near Griffin, work the city earlier described as beginning in April and lasting about a month. That banner also remains active, which suggests the telecom piece of the job has outlasted the original estimate or overlaps the larger Griffin Street utility project.

Why it matters here

Griffin Street is one of the few east–west cuts through the historic core. Closures push traffic onto LaGrange Street, Broad Street and the U.S. 29 edges — the same paths school drop-offs, church traffic and anyone heading toward I-85 Exit 35 already share. Delivery trucks for nearby storefronts feel it first; so do residents who used Griffin as a shortcut around the railroad and Main Street pinch points.

What’s next / how to weigh in

Watch the city home page and the Griffin Street notice for a reopen posting. Call City Hall at 770-583-2289 if you need a current status for a delivery or event. For the wider roads file, follow the Infrastructure tracker.

Unverified: The city has not posted a new reopen date on the pages linked above; the Ledger has not independently surveyed the work zone today.
